Old ink drawings

While going through some old papers, I came across a handful of old sketches I’d done years ago—drawings I hadn't even remembered making. They’d been tucked away all this time!

They are traditional black-and-white ink drawings, created with disposable Staedtler technical pens. Back then, we used to call these pens "Rotrings," though that was actually just the brand name we were required to use in high school art class. That wretched contraption was refillable and would spew excess ink with every stroke, causing the teacher to immediately reject our assignment and force us to start over from scratch. After high school, I discovered disposable technical pens and—well—let's just say I had some choice words for that teacher's entire honorable lineage...

Anyway... Back then, I enjoyed practicing black-and-white drawing using animal photos from wildlife books and monsters from comic book panels as references. I chose to draw monsters instead of people because any mistake is magically disguised when you're drawing monsters XD.

 

AMAZON JAGUARA

Jaguara is one of my early original characters for "Layer and Sword." She is an Amazon warrior —as beautiful as she is ruthless (hence her name)— who led her fellow warriors and practiced the darkest variation of their legendary custom of abducting men for mating: they would subsequently kill the men, as well as any offspring born male. Jaguara meets her end at the hands of Valentia —an Amazon and her former lover— who seeks revenge for the killing of the man she had fallen in love with and with whom she had eloped to raise their baby far away from their violent world.

I spent over three weeks working on her design because I couldn't decide whether to make her a fox girl, a cat girl, a human, a elf, or some other species. In the end, I opted for a half-dragoness. Although she could also pass for a diablese.

 

NANCY

This is the first design created for a collection based on the outfits of my childhood dolls. The ensemble the girl is wearing is inspired—at least in terms of shape—by the outfit worn by the first fashion doll I ever owned: Sintra by Berjusa.

DANIELLE, LA ARQUERA

ZANADRIN, ENANO DRUIDA

Creado para "Layer and Sword", como la criatura que descubre y cuida de Layer en su infancia. En el guion original de Paco Hernández iban a ser unos granjeros quienes tomaran ese papel, pero a mí me parecía más adecuado un ser del bosque, y acabamos decidiendo que sería este enano druida. Lo que nunca determinamos con exactitud es qué clase de ser es. O sea, sí, es un enano, pero con esas orejas de elfo y esos ojos de extraterrestre ni siquiera a mí acaba de quedarme claro, y eso que lo diseñé yo XD.

 

PRINCESA NABEL

Nabel es uno de los personajes que Paco Hernández creó para nuestra historia "Layer and Sword". Iba a ser un cómic que él guionizaría y yo dibujaría, pero requería demasiado tiempo y trabajo y no lo llegamos a hacer. Todo quedó en algunos capítulos escritos y unos bocetos de los personajes a partir de los cuales yo hice algunas ilustraciones. Esta es la primera que coloreé digitalmente, allá por el Jurásico. Si algún día me apetece y tengo tiempo, colorearé el resto y las subiré.

La princesa Nabel representaba a la mujer ideal de Paco en aquella época, la chica de la que se enamora Sword, el protagonista (el alter ego de Paco). Era valiente, simpática, alegre, dulce, capaz de defenderse en combate pero compasiva y comprensiva. Un rayo de sol comparada con Layer, mi alter ego en esa historia.
